Jason’s Official 2018 NFL Draft Scouting Report: SMU DE Justin Lawler

Justin Lawler, DE, SMU

Scouting Report:

Lawler finished his career at SMU, where he played in 49 career games, had 226 tackles, 40.5 for loss, 20.5 sacks, 3 pass breakups, 4 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovered. He has good size, he is a tackling machine, is a tough nosed player, and has good instincts. He gets good pressure on the quarterback, and is a good pass rusher. He is a hard hitter, and a run stuffer. He is a very relentless defender, a very powerful defender, a defensive play maker, and a difference maker on defense. He also powers his way through the offensive line in pursuit of the ball carrier, he gets a good push on the offensive line. and he does not get pushed around that easily at the line of scrimmage. On the other hand, he has issues with speedy quarterbacks and running backs at times, and he does not have the best speed, but that does not hurt his game. With that said, I view Lawler as a day 3 pick when it is all said and done.
