With the 2018 NFL Draft now almost a full month in the books, it’s time to take a look at the top contenders for both offensive and defensive rookie of the year awards.
First we have our top 3 offensive rookies, who have a shot at being offensive rookie of year after the 2018 season.
- New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley\
The Giants got the best player in this years class when they selected Barkley 2nd overall, and despite not having the best offensive line blocking for him, he should be one of the favorites to win OROY.
“The Giants’ Saquon Barkley — the no. 2 pick in the draft — is a huge favorite to win 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year, sitting at +150 on most sportsbooks, this is actually unanimously considered by those betting on sports a tantalizing line to put your money on. No running back has been drafted that high since Reggie Bush in 2006, and some pundits are predicting an Ezekiel Elliott-like rookie season for Barkley.”
- Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield
This was by far the most shocking pick on the 2018 draft, and we didn’t have to wait long, as he was the 1st overall pick.
But, while he has a shot if he wins the starting quarterback job, it appears Tyrod Taylor will be the week one starter.
“The next-best odds belong to first-overall pick Baker Mayfield (+400), even though he doesn’t project as the starter for the Browns, who signed Tyrod Taylor as a stop-gap this offseason.
In reality, the odds for both players are overly optimistic. Barkley won’t have the luxury of running behind Dallas’ offensive line, and Mayfield probably won’t see the field until at least mid-season. The last two OROY’s — Alvin Kamara and Dak Prescott — were less heralded prospects who landed in a perfect spot. Odds are that something similar happens this season.”
- Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen
The Bills traded up to the 7th-overall pick to select their franchise QB in Wyoming’s Josh Allen. I expect Allen to be in competition to be the week one starter.
Allen has a legit shot, but it would have to come with Barkley either not having the impact year one that most expect, or an injury to occur, and for Mayfield to not be in te starting lineup till at least week 5 or 6.
Next up are the top 3 defensive rookies, who have a shot of being defensive rookie of the year after the 2018 season.
- Denver Broncos DE/OLB Bradley Chubb
Chubb comes into the perfect situation, where he will play opposite Von Miller, giving him a great shot at being DROY in 2018. Chubb was the most polished edge rusher, and has the highest upside of all edge rushers taken.
- New Orleans Saints DE Marcus Davenport
This may have been the shock of the 1st-round behind Baker Mayfield going 1st-overall. The Saints gave up their 2019 1st-rounder, to move up to 14th-overall to pick the edge rusher from UTSA, not Lamar Jackson, as many thought they were going with.
But, Davenport, who may not be the most polished edge rusher, he has such a high ceiling. And I truly believe that Davenport has a solid shot as being DPOY, like with Chubb, Davenport will be lining up opposite one of the best defenders in the league, in Cameron Jordan.
- Dallas Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch
The Cowboys took the high riser Vander Esch with the 19th-overall pick, and he should start from day one.
And with aging veterans like Sean Lee, expect Vander Esch to have a huge role come September, this is why I believe Vander Esch has a solid shot at DPOY.
